Michigan’s Unemployment Rate Falls in April as Labor Force Declines

Michigan’s unemployment rate fell in April, with decreases in 15 of the state’s 17 labor market areas, according to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget. The regional jobless rates ranged from 3.0% to 6.8%, with a median decrease of 0.2 percentage points. The overall employment and labor force levels, however, saw reductions across most regions, reflecting a complex labor market dynamic.

Despite the monthly declines, Michigan’s labor market showed year-over-year growth. Nonfarm payroll jobs increased by 36,000, or 0.8%, primarily in construction and professional services. Detailed county-specific unemployment rates and the full state jobs report for April are available here on the department’s website.
